Get ready for Argentine Tango Workshop with David Phillips on April 2!

April 2: Argentine Tango workshops, taught by David Phillips.

These classes are suitable for all levels, even never-evers.

Class 1 at 6:45 PM – Connections Create Meaning

Argentine tango is a conversation of movement, connection, and expression. When we find joy in our partner, the music, and those around us, every dance becomes extraordinary.

How do we clearly and comfortably express our intentions? How do we co-create a shared interpretation of the music? Through guided experiences and playful explorations, we’ll discover our sweet spot in the range of possibilities. By dancing both roles, we’ll learn what feels good for our partner and apply these insights to create expressive, musical movement.

Class 2 at 7:45 PM – Relationships Create Flow

With strong connections in place, we unlock new movement possibilities. The beauty of tango lies in its simplicity—just three fundamental ways of moving with a partner create infinite possibilities.

Like the four base molecules of DNA that shape all life, these three movement relationships form the foundation of tango’s rich diversity. By understanding how to transition seamlessly between them, we create effortless flow—around the room, around our partner, and within the dance itself. Let’s explore how structure and creativity combine to make each dance uniquely expressive.

David Phillips

David Phillips teaches Argentine tango with a playful, non-traditional approach, seeing it as a cooperative game where everyone can win. Guided self-discovery methods help dancers become Clear, Comfortable, and Creative by building on natural movement, social connection, and musicality.

With diverse training in dance, mind-body systems (Alexander Technique, Feldenkrais, NLP), and international tango studies, David blends best practices for learning and teaching.

David teaches in Austin, Texas and beyond through private lessons, small groups, and guest workshops. He and pro-partner Liz Diana also teach online with a free course and videos — a gift to the dance community.

You probably can try the intermediate or “beginner-plus” level class. Many people start as “follows” then re-take the class as “leads.” We switch partners regularly during class, so any learning-struggles will be evened out.

Also, if you just took the beginner-level class and want to watch the second class, you’re welcome to hang out on the side and watch.

Where do I go to dance?

Many of us go to Sundance Saloon in San Francisco for social dancing. It is a country-western themed dance for the LGBT+ community and it happens every Thursday and Sunday.

There, we dance country-western two-step, country waltz, west coast swing, east coast swing, nightclub two-step, and do line dances.

Some of us also go to Starlight Strut, which is very similar to Sundance Saloon, but for women, trans people, and non-binary people. That happens on the second Saturday of the month in the same building as this class.
